extension care

Please review our recommended extension care guidelines below.

Washing

Brush out extensions with a Wet Brush before getting into the shower. This helps prevent deep tangles and matting.

Use a sulfate, paraben, sodium chloride free shampoo and conditioner to prolong your hair color and the extensions color as well. Shampoo gently between the rows, I suggest sectioning hair prior to washing to get the best cleaning,  no need for vigorous scrubbing. And shampoo your hair DOWN. Don’t throw it all on top of your head and scrub it all around. I recommend Oribe, Mr. Smith, or any other salon grade shampoo & conditioner.

Brushing

Use a leave in conditioner/detangler AND oil right after your shower and before you brush out your hair with the Wet Brush (again)

When brushing wet hair make sure it’s really towel dried or air dried, start from your ends and work your way up to the scalp. Hold the hair in one hand (pinched in a ponytail) and brush down.

The least amount of tugging on the hair while it’s wet the better! But don’t let it completely air dry before brushing it.

Styling

Rough dry your hair 90% of the way (meaning no tugging at the extensions with a round brush or comb, just use your hands/fingers). This applies to Dry Bars as well. Make sure to communicate to whoever is styling your hair to NOT round brush your hair from start to finish.

You can use a round brush or a paddle brush with a small amount of tension to smooth your hair and the extension hair, the last few minutes of your blow dry.

If curling your extensions, use a heat protector and run the extension hair through the curling iron to smooth the hair once or twice, before placing curls. This will give your extensions a more polished look, close the cuticle, and prolong the extension hair.

We’ll go over curling during your extension installation as well as send you videos on how to recreate this look at home.

Sleeping

Brush the extension hair out, place a hair oil on your ends, then place in a loose ponytail or braid

If you notice any excess tangling or hair shedding, please contact me! As these are quick fixes when addressed right away and will prevent damage to your hair.

You can live a normal active lifestyle with Hand Tied Extensions, just treat the extensions with some gentleness to keep them looking their best, the longest.

If you’re blonde, NEVER let sunscreen or suntan oil touch the extension hair. The ingredient Avobenzone will turn your extensions peach or pink.
